What to look for in Shanghai

Shanghai is a useful place to compare contemporary Chinese design with more traditional gifts. Pick a theme first: these four stops are spread across the city.

  • Small Shanghai-themed design gifts and useful souvenirs.
  • Tea in a clearly labelled, manageable pack.
  • Contemporary clothing you can try on and museum-inspired paper goods.

Buy carefully: A Shanghai shop is not proof of Shanghai manufacture. Check the maker, materials and exact product; international labels are not automatically cheaper here.

Give your shopping day a shape.

These are editorial route suggestions. Allow time to browse, compare and take a break; check travel times in your map app.

A design-focused half day

Start with clothing on Huaihai Road, then travel to West Bund Central for smaller city gifts. These are separate areas: plan transport between them and leave time for trying things on.

  1. Masonprince — Huaihai Road flagship
  2. Tingdeco Gift Shop — West Bund Central

Prefer tea or a cultural visit?

Choose Tianshan Tea City for a focused tea session, or make the Museum East shop part of a Pudong museum visit. These are alternatives, not consecutive stops on a walking route.

  1. Zhengshantang — Tianshan Tea City
  2. Shanghai Museum East — souvenir shop

02 / Tea

Zhengshantang — Tianshan Tea City

This branch appears in Zhengshantang’s official shop directory. Use the unit number as well as the building address when you arrive at the tea market.

04 / Contemporary clothing

Masonprince — Huaihai Road flagship

This Chinese fashion label provides a focused stop on Huaihai Road for visitors who want to try on something they would normally only see online. Browse by fit and construction rather than buying an entire look from a display.

Look for: Everyday clothing, footwear and accessories.

The details that make the day easier

  • At Tianshan Tea City, save unit 1100 as well as the building address; the market contains many independent shops.
  • Check Museum East entry arrangements before going. The shopping address does not itself provide museum admission.
  • For clothing, record the item code and size. For tea, keep the label and receipt with the sealed packet.

Use the Chinese address in your preferred map app or show it to a driver. Google Maps access in mainland China can vary. Recheck opening hours and any museum entry arrangements directly; older official listings are useful leads, not a promise a branch has stayed unchanged.

Ask for an itemized receipt and check return conditions before paying. Departure tax refunds apply only at participating stores and to eligible purchases: see the refund guide. When returning home, check your destination’s customs rules.
